Since my last post, the number of people who have been diagnosed with the virus has continued to spike unabated in this country (Switzerland). For the canton I live in, Vaud, from 695 on Wednesday 18th March (the date I published my last post) we are now, i.e. on Monday 23rd March, at 1,880. The 2,000 mark will be crossed tomorrow, barring some miracle.

So Vaud is the canton with the largest number of detected covid-19 carriers, although it is Ticino (which is closest to Italy and which employs many cross-border workers from that country) where the death toll is the worst:  48 versus 16 for Vaud. This reading is still nothing in comparison with the staggering numbers of deaths recorded in Italy, Spain or Iran, but the death toll in Switzerland (118 as at 23rd March) is bound to get worse.

It is really disheartening to think that as early as tomorrow the above map will show several hundred cases more, presumably spread mostly between the cantons of Vaud (VD), Ticino (TI), Geneva (GE), Zurich (ZH), Wallis (VS), Berne (BE) and Basle City (BS).

Let us hope that this country does not get to experience as harrowing numbers as those which are being recorded by Iran:
